
Automated External Defibrillation (AED) is well established as the only effective therapy for cardiac arrest. The defibrillator is used to administer a controlled electric shock to the patient in order to restore the normal rhythm of the heart.
This course is designed for current holders of the First Aid at Work certificate. It covers the necessary theory backed up with practical sessions allowing delegates to practice their newly acquired skills.
Course Content
Safe management of emergency situations
Initial assessment skills
Function and operation of the respiratory and circulatory system
Basic life support (protocols, external chest compressions, artificial ventilation, AED)
Care of the unconscious casualty
Guidelines on the use of an AED unit
Theory of AED operation and safety
Practical experience of using an AED
Care and maintenance of an AED
The role of the first aider
Understanding the workings of the heart and the effectiveness of defibrillation
Recognising and treating a suspected heart attack/cardiac arrest
