Apprenticeship Units

Apprenticeship units are short, flexible training courses designed to help employers respond to immediate skills needs.
They provide targeted development for existing employees, focusing on practical knowledge and skills that can be applied in the workplace straight away.

SIGTA delivers apprenticeship units in a way that keeps the emphasis on real job roles, operational requirements and long-term capability rather than training for its own sake.

What employers need to know

Apprenticeship units are built from recognised occupational standards and focus on specific areas of technical competence.
They are typically delivered over a short period, allowing employers to upskill their workforce quickly without the commitment of a full apprenticeship programme.

Training is designed to fit around the needs of your business, with flexible delivery and clear outcomes aligned to workplace performance.

Who apprenticeship units are for

Apprenticeship units are intended for employed learners aged 19 and over, where there is a clear need to build capability in a defined area.

In practice, this often includes:

  • Employees with a mechanical bias who would benefit from developing electrical knowledge and skills
  • Team members who lack a basic understanding of electrical principles and need structured upskilling
  • Engineering operatives and technicians who need to respond to changing job requirements or business demands

Electrical Fitting and Assembly Unit (Level 2)

SIGTA currently offers the Electrical Fitting and Assembly apprenticeship unit, focused on the core fundamentals required for electrical work in an engineering environment.

This unit provides a structured introduction to:

  • Electrical principles such as voltage, current and resistance
  • Safe working practices, including isolation and risk assessment
  • Reading and interpreting wiring diagrams and technical information
  • Cable handling, termination and assembly techniques
  • Testing, inspection and basic fault finding

Training is delivered through a combination of theory and hands-on practical activity, with assessment based on both technical knowledge and observed skills in the workshop.

Why employers use apprenticeship units

Employers typically choose apprenticeship units when they need:

  • A fast, focused way to address specific skills gaps
Practical training that links directly to job roles
  • A flexible alternative to longer apprenticeship programmes
  • A route to improve productivity and workforce capability in the short to medium term

When aligned to a clear workforce plan, apprenticeship units can play a valuable role in supporting progression and adapting to changing technical requirements.

Delivery and structure

The unit is delivered as day-release training at SIGTA’s Shoreham-by-Sea training centre over a defined period, typically around 12 weeks.

This format allows employees to continue contributing to the business while building new capability in a structured and supported way.
