Information for Schools, Parents and Carers

Supporting people into skilled careers through apprenticeships

SIGTA works with schools and colleges across Sussex and the South East to help students, parents and carers understand apprenticeships and the career opportunities they offer.

We provide clear, impartial information about technical and business apprenticeships, working closely with employers to support people as they move from education into employment.

Why choose SIGTA

How SIGTA supports schools and colleges

Our focus is on helping students understand their options and make informed decisions about their future.

We support careers education by:

  • Attending school and college careers events
  • Providing up‑to‑date information on apprenticeships and vacancies
  • Sharing real examples of apprentice career pathways
  • Working with employers across a wide range of industries

Apprenticeships explained

Apprenticeships offer a practical route into skilled employment.

They combine:

  • Paid employment
  • On‑the‑job learning
  • Off‑the‑job training and qualifications
  • Clear progression opportunities

Students can begin an apprenticeship from the age of 16, earning a wage while developing skills that employers value.

For many people, apprenticeships provide a strong alternative to full‑time study, with long‑term career benefits.

Careers events and school engagement

We are happy to attend careers fairs, assemblies and events where possible, bringing real‑world insight into technical and office‑based apprenticeships.

We aim to support as many schools as we can across East and West Sussex, although availability may vary during busy periods.

Where attendance is not possible, we can still provide:

  • Digital resources
  • Careers information
  • Signposting to current opportunities

Keeping schools informed

SIGTA schools newsletter

We produce a regular newsletter for schools and colleges, sharing:

  • Apprenticeship information
  • Current and upcoming vacancies
  • Features on apprentices and employers
  • Insights into different career pathways

Each issue highlights a specific apprenticeship role, such as Flight Simulator Technician, CAD Technician or Healthcare Engineering.

Schools can request to be added to the mailing list here

Resources for students,
parents and teachers

We provide a range of supporting materials, including:

  • Learners’ guide to apprenticeships
  • Interview tips and application advice
  • Careers information and external resources

These resources are designed to support careers discussions and help students prepare for next steps.
