Operate MEWPs (Mobile Elevated Work Platforms)
SIGTA’s Operate MEWPs course provides ITSSAR accredited training for individuals who use Mobile Elevated Work Platforms such as telescopic, boom and scissor lifts.
Delivered onsite using your own equipment, this course ensures safe, efficient, and legally compliant operation when working at height.

Course Overview
Our Operate MEWPs course provides clear, practical instruction in the safe use of Mobile Elevated Work Platforms, helping operators gain the essential skills required when working at height. MEWPs - including cherry pickers, boom lifts and scissor lifts - provide a controlled and safer method of accessing elevated work areas, and this course equips learners with the knowledge to operate them safely and efficiently.
Approved by ITSSAR and meeting the requirements of Regulation 9 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER), the course combines concise theory with practical, hands‑on instruction delivered onsite at your premises.
Operators gain confidence in identifying hazards, using correct operating modes, carrying out pre‑use checks and managing environmental factors such as weather and wind speed.
During this course you will learn
- Legislation and regulatory requirements for MEWP operation, including PUWER Regulation 9
- Types of mobile platforms (telescopic, boom and scissor lifts) and their appropriate uses
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements for MEWP operation
- Operating modes, travelling modes and prohibited uses
- MEWP hazards and how to implement safety precautions to reduce risk
- Effects of weather and wind (including understanding the Beaufort Scale)
- Handling materials safely when working at height
- Daily visual checks and equipment inspection routines
- How to choose the correct MEWP for the job based on conditions and task type
- Written and practical testing to validate competence
This course is ideal for operators who use MEWPs such as cherry pickers, boom lifts and scissor lifts and need recognised, ITSSAR‑approved training to work safely at height.
Your training will be delivered by one of SIGTA’s ITSSAR accredited instructors, each bringing extensive hands-on experience and a clear, practical teaching style.

Courses include practical examples, demonstrations or workplace-based scenarios where appropriate. Some courses involve hands-on elements, while others focus on safety awareness, decision-making and correct procedures rather than physical equipment use.
Are the courses accredited?
Most health and safety courses are SIGTA‑delivered awareness or skills-based courses rather than externally accredited qualifications. They are based on recognised legislation and good practice and are designed to support competence, compliance and safer working practices.
Do these courses support legal compliance?
Yes. All health and safety courses are built around recognised UK health and safety legislation and industry guidance, helping organisations meet their legal duties and promote safe systems of work in line with workplace requirements.

Health and safety courses are suitable for employees at all levels who need to understand workplace risks, legal responsibilities and safe working practices. Courses can be tailored to those carrying out specific tasks, as well as employees with supervisory or safety responsibilities.
